Third-hand Smoke: an Even Worse Stealth Killer
Third-hand smoke (THS) represent the tiny particles clinging to carpets, cushions, furniture and even car upholsteries, etc. Particles
would be re-emitted back to the air. The house dust of smokers’ homes has nicotine even months afterwards; children are worst
affected. The Indoor Environment Department of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Environmental Energy Technologies
Division (USA) reported that nicotine adsorbed onto surfaces reacted with nitrous acid (an air pollutant) to form tobacco-specific
nitrosamines. In China, the worst places for THS are the mahjong dens: THS may even spread through the clothes to the home.
Although related to lung cancer causation, there is no “safe level” for THS. Note these sources of THS: (1) Clothes are strong absorbers
of tobacco particles (2) Baby slings: usually washed infrequently (3) Pacifiers may absorb tobacco particles: ingested by infants
(4) Infant cot. A York University study found excessive tobacco-related carcinogens (for children aged 1-6) in dust particles in ¾ of
smokers’ homes and 2/3 of non-smokers’ homes: children whose parents do not smoke are still at a risk of up to 0.1% of having
cancer related to tobacco particles in house dust: the home has become the main source of passive smoking exposure!
