Is Health Destined? Better Take Control Yourself
Although cooperation with your doctor is a lot of common sense, doctors themselves also face the dilemma of having to be an
omnipotent healer yet to be a scapegoat if something goes wrong. Neither is our health destined entirely by our genes: there is a very
much greater role played by many environmental factors, e.g., diet, stress, pesticides, fuels, plastics, etc., all of these may well play
a paramount role on top of our genetic setup. Despite the phenomenon of genetic susceptibility, its relationship with disease is not a
matter of course; the concept itself is merely relative and may involve a complex interplay of numerous genetic factors: in fact, without
such genetic susceptibility does not equate to no disease. The famous story of Angelina Jolie’s prophylactically removing her breasts
and ovaries to avoid cancer development due to her BRCA1 gene refers. Yet, researchers fail to reveal the mechanism of the so-called
“longevity genes”; Stanford University also failed to find any longevity genes in 17 centenarians. According to the WHO, our health is
related to these factors: (1) Biological: 15% (2) Environmental: 10% (3) Medical provisions: 8% (4) Personal behavior, lifestyle: 60%.
So, we ourselves are in control as genes are not necessarily the predetermined factor. Your health is in your own hands!
