A Star of Traditional Chinese Medicine: an Interview With Prof Liu LiZhi, Chief, Department
of Acupressure, Suzhou Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital
Acupressure is manual manipulation of the patient’s acupoints and meridians for health and healing. Prof Liu believes that, in the
modern era of very prevalent mobile personal electronics, the spine is under great stress. Regular “maintenance” by acupressure is
not only mandatory but also simple and without adverse effects. He opines that there are 100 minor ailments related to imbalance due
to subtle drift of the vertebral bodies. Even the so-called “sub-health state” prevalent in Asians is related to the "chi" and circulation
related to the spine. Prof Liu also believes in integration of Western with traditional Chinese medicine: the two streams are not mutually
exclusive. He cited a case of an 86 year old Mr Li from Indonesia with inoperable prolapsed inter-vertebral discs, yet, Prof Liu’s
acupressure had restored his mobility and enabled a much better quality of life. Prof Liu also criticized some inappropriately applied
acupressure causing worse symptoms and high blood pressure or even heart attacks. To him, acupuncture is effective for orthopedic,
medical, pediatric, gynecological and ear, nose and throat diseases; and invaluable for geriatrics, rehabilitation and cosmetic
applications.
