SELF-CARE OF HYPERTENSIVES
According to Prof Liu Lisheng, Chairman of the World Hypertension League, our hypertension rate rose from 5.1% (1959) to 18.
8% (2002) with high cripple and death rates and low awareness, compliance and control rates - self-care is relevant. Limit fat, salt
(5 grams/day), Calories; refrain from smoking, excessive drinking and black tea (with too much theophylline): causing restlessness,
insomnia, palpitation and high blood pressure; green tea is preferred. Take less chili and refined food: causes constipation
requiring excessive strains: blood pressure may shoot up. Take appropriate, regular and progressive physical exercises, e.g.,
walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and aerobics; the heart rate is preferably (170 - age) per min., 3-5 times per week; each 30-
60 min.; avoid exercises causing postural hypotension or excessive breath strains. Be positive, forgiving; relaxed; reduce external
tension. Medications, e.g., diuretics, calcium-channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-II receptor antagonists and beta-
blockers are used in combination and taken regularly to bring down hypertension gradually. Have faith, determination and
perseverance!
