DYEINGYOUR HAIR FOR APPEARANCES: HARMFUL TO HEALTH
Many hair dyes contain nitrobenzene, phenylic acid and m-phenylenediamine that are absorbed through the skin. The HK
Consumers' Council found hair dyes had inaccurate labeling, inappropriate warnings, no list of ingredients, no expiry dates; 3
"natural" products had allergenic m-phenylenediamine; pregnant and nursing mothers should use. The CCTV reported hair dyes
had cancer causing phenylenediamines (p- and m-); so did the Guangdong Province Drug Administration for other hair dyes. The
American Cancer Society found females using permanent hair dyes had a 70% higher chance for lymphomas, with dark hair dyes
having cancer risks of 310%, red ones, 200%, and brown ones, 100% higher. An investigation by the Iowa State University,
Minnesota, USA found, for females with leukemia, 40% used hair dyes; among 13,000 females with hair dye use, leukemia risks
were 3.8 times higher. Dyes contain lead acetate risk lead accumulation in the body. As allergic reactions may be severe, always
perform a patch test on skin first. Use hair dyes sparingly, especially the permanent type; never mix hair dyes; wear gloves; after
dyeing, wash thoroughly.
