PREVENTING "DRYNESS SYNDROME" THROUGH FOOD THERAPY
Those with "dryness syndrome" would often have dryness of mouth, lips and nose; throat irritation, nose bleeding; frequent dry
cough and sneezing: these are likely due to an auto-immune mechanism involving various glands, e.g., the lacrimal gland for
tears, the salivary glands; the respiratory and digestive tracts, the kidneys, muscles, joints and blood vessels, etc. In fact, there
is a hormonal imbalance and deranged autonomic nervous system functions. Traditional Chinese physicians believe the "dryness"
to be a kind of evil. The "dryness syndrome" could exist on its own (as primary), or secondary to other auto-immune diseases,
e.g., systemic lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, etc. In autumn, taking supplementary fluids is important,
e.g., tea that quenches thirst and is good for health. Pears quench thirst, suppress cough, dispel phlegm, clear heat and reduce
the body fire, sooth the lungs and purify the heart, nourish the blood and promote healing, diminish agitation; pears also facilitate
urination and bowel movements. It is imperative to avoid spicy and deep-fried food; take regular exercises and be open!
