TREATMENT & BREATHING REHABILITATIVE TRAINING FOR SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX
Our lungs are wrapped by pleural cavities: a sealed vacuum between the lungs and the chest wall; the lungs expanding with the
chest wall. "Spontaneous pneumothorax" is unprovoked air leakage into the vacuum: the lung collapses considerably. It occurs
in 4-9/100,000, mostly in tall and thin male subjects who may have inborn, abnormally large alveoli (tiny air exchange units), or
due to constant forceful coughs or inappropriate sports - symptoms are sudden chest pain, chest discomfort, shortness of
breath and irritating cough. Pneumothorax of 30% or less with insignificant symptoms need no particular treatment: the air would
be absorbed eventually; otherwise, suction of the trapped air is required; for recurrent attacks, operation may be required, e.g.,
minimally invasive surgery or VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery) to excise the abnormally large (damaged) alveoli; after
operation, weeks of breathing rehabilitation is required for best re-expansion. Prevention: have adequate sleep; avoid forced
pushing, e.g., for constipation; stop smoking; take a well-balanced diet; take regular breathing exercises; avoid chest infections
or even very loud music.
