A SOUND POLICY TO PREVENT "CIVILIZATION DISEASES"
According to the WHO, over nutrition and life style disorders are threatening our health and lives even in younger populations -
obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, coronaries, diabetes form the "syndrome of 5 diseases". Annual death is ~8.20 million
(developed countries) and 11.7 million (developing countries): 45% of deaths. As US soldiers ~20 years old dying during the
Korean War had significant atherosclerosis of the arteries, the risk of developing coronaries and hypertension occurs young. Our
diet is mainly cereal with legumes and their products; with fresh vegetables, unrefined sugar used sparingly; cooking is with
vegetable oil. But, our diet has changed, e.g., in Shanghai, the 1992 staple diet was 22% lower than that of 1982 but food from
animal sources rose by 1.5 times; high Calorie, high fat and high protein fast foods and sugary drinks abound. Fat accounts for
27% of Calories, higher than the National urban average (25%) and Japan (24%). From 1961 to 2000, our Country's meat
consumption rose 10 times but fruits decreased from >80 to <70 g, vegetables, from 319.3 to 251.9 g: further away from the
Guidelines. Following the Guideline is best!
