"Emperors' Disease" Coming into Folks' Homes: Comparing Western and TCM Approaches to Gout Management:
Interview with Prof Xiong Peihua: Specialist, Integration of Western & TCM, First Hospital, Suzhou University
Confined to emperors due to over nutrition, gout is now common even in folks. TCM described gout as "li ji feng": a multiple-joint disease
due to wind and wetness evils - with weakness of liver and kidneys; blood stasis and phlegm obstruction. Western medicine ascribes gout to
be due to excess of uric acid from purine metabolism disturbance; urates crystallize in smaller joints with pain, redness and swelling: "tophi";
permanent joint damage ensues; crystals may even block up the kidneys. With protean manifestations, gout is a complex disease: high uric
acid may be silent; others, early kidney failure. Take adequate water; physical exercises; appropriate medicine; weight reduction; regular
medical check ups. Prevent permanent joint damage; control all concomitant medical conditions. TCM relies on dispelling wetness evil;
reactivating blood stasis: in the acute phase, White Tiger Decoction for Stagnation; chronic phase, Decoction of 5 with Cinnamon Twig,
Astragali Root; acupuncture; avoid excessive fat, internal organs, seafood, cauliflower, legumes, mushrooms, red meats, broth and gravy.
Avoid drinking: may induce tophi formation!
