What Happened to Mother's Eyes: Role of Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy
Lovely Xinyi's mother found out on her 50th birthday her eyes were blurred - suffering from diabetic retinopathy (DR). She had type 2
diabetes for 7 years but the control of her blood sugar level was poor. For her retina affected by her uncontrolled diabetes, laser therapy was
useful for restoring vision. DR occurs in 25% of diabetics, rising to 50% at 8 years. Symptoms are flickering lights, blurring, or large areas of
darkening and even total blindness. On examination, there is bleeding and fluid seeping from the fundus of the eyeball, swelling of the macula,
bleeding into the vitreous body of the eyeball, retinal detachment, etc. DR is related uncontrolled and prolonged diabetes history, especially
when associated with high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc. Apart from the best control by Western medicine, there is a definite
adjunctive role of TCM that helps to better preserve vision, e.g., herbs like Chinese Yam, Wolfberry seeds, Salvia, Alismatis, etc., are for "xiao
ke" ; so is acupuncture. Avoid finely polished rice, flour or fruits with high sugary contents, desserts, ice cream and sweet drinks. Check your
eye sight and fundi 1-2 times a year.
