HOWTO AVOID "FESTIVAL
SICKNESS" & THE "POST-
FESTIVAL SYNDROME"
We eat, drink and play to our
hearts' content during holidays
but, once, a heavy drinker had a
stroke at his doorstep. As our liver
processes 30 grams of alcohol an
hour, heavy drinking accumulates
alcohol, damaging our bodies, let
alone the hypertension, high
cholesterol, coronaries and diabe-
tes of alcoholics. "Delicatessen
syndrome" is the brisk intake of
"MSG" (mono-sodium glutamate)
of tasty food, e.g., 0.5 to a few
hours after food, dizziness, panic,
shortness of breath and numb-
ness of upper limbs result. Gross
overeating may also cause acute
inflammation of the pancreas that
produces digestive enzymes.
Gout is also more frequent, e.g.,
after much beer drinking or sea
food, painful "tophi" at joints
o c c u r . F i r e c r a c k e r s a r e
hazardous; prolonged net surfing
hurts the eyes and the wrists.
With severe disruption of our
regular lives and prolonged con-
finement to overcrowded indoor
environments, infections occur
readily; even insomnia and de-
pression may prevail. However,
excessive sleep is also unhealthy,
j u s t l i k e o v e r e a t i ng . A f t e r
holidays, depression, agitation
and poor temper are common.
