ON CARING FOR BABYS'
EYES
As t h e eye s a r e s o
important, we had better take
note of how to care for the eyes
even from the youngest age: (1)
At 1 month, the baby can sense
light and the presence of
objects; at 3 months, can no-
tice people but at 18-38 cm
(angle of 45o) (2) Babies like
red, green and blue colors, es-
pecially bright ones or objects
with contrast features (3) Ba-
bies would not be able to seek
the mother till 3 months old; the
development of the vision con-
tinues progressively even till the
ages of 4-6 years (4) As babies
are long-sighted, attractive toys
hanging over the cot should not
be too near; change the posi-
tion of the toys regularly to avoid
straining the eyes (5) Even the
position of breast feeding
should change from time to
time, otherwise the eyes tend
to be fixed in one direction (6)
To allow maximum stimulation;
do not cover the baby's eyes
unless there is bright sunlight
(7) Dim the lights when sleep-
ing (8) Flash photography may
hurt the baby's retina (9) Avoid
sharp, pointed objects / toys,
pencils, chopsticks, etc., espe-
cially when learning to walk (10)
Use water to wash accidental
spillage of chemicals (11) Let
natural tearing bring out small
objects, e.g., sand in the eyes.
