ENJOYING TEA ON THE
RIVERSIDE SOUTH OF
YANGTZE
In order to rekindle my nos-
talgia notion on teahouses south
of the Yangtze River, I went to
enjoy tea in the suburbs of
Shanghai. There was an inter-
esting mixture of all trades; al-
though tea was supplemented
by snacks, these would seldom
overshadow the tea drinking
itself. All were quite relaxed and
talking freely, almost on anything
on earth.The waiter (exclusively
male) of the teahouse was busy
as ever. Of note was the atmo-
sphere where everyone could
talk on whatever opinion they
express, even grievances or un-
happ i ness cou l d now be
"solved" by airing it out. The
other aspect is spreading of the
news - it was like an information
exchange center. On the stage,
a young lady clad in the tradi-
tional qipao was singing "Ma-
dame White Snake", to the en-
joyment of many a client who
tapped lightly on the table in tune
with the music. Obviously, a lot
of people who would otherwise
be very quiet and subdued,
would suddenly come to life in
such teahouses - an alternative
kind of "therapy" for those feel-
ing lonely even in the comfort of
their own homes. Thus, the tea
pot seems to be therapeutic -
after the tea, everybody became
happier and more relaxed.
