THE "FLU" VIRUS:
A CANCER KILLER
Paradoxically, the "flu" virus
may eradicate cancers. A Ger-
man professor had found those
who seldom had flu seemed
more prone to cancers. The flu
virus facilitates the release of
defense lymphocytic factors and
interferon and may even kill can-
cer cells. Scientists at the US
Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. con-
firmed an adenovirus directly
kills 6% of the cancer cells in
animal studies; a Japanese
study also found a strain of flu
virus with the ability to kill can-
cer cells. Similarly, work at the
Oxford University, UK on the
"envelope" of the virus would
facilitate their entry into the can-
cer cells - where it could then
very rapidly copy itself thou-
sands of times. At the MD
Anderson Cancer Center,
Houston, USA, using liposomes
(minute fat granules) as the "car-
rier" for better penetration, in-
jected common flu viruses re-
duced cancer genes of breast
and ovarian cancers. Data from
the US National Cancer Institute
also confirmed that, for 27 inop-
erable head & neck and ovarian
cancer patients, the injection of
a variant of the common flu vi-
rus achieved a 6% "complete
cure" in head & neck cancer
patients. The future depends on
the relationship with chemo-
therapy and radiotherapy.
