SHOULD
NANO
FABRICS,
COSMETICS
BE
USED?
Nanotechnology
refers
to
materials smaller
than
100
nanometers,
or
1l100th the
width of a human
hair.
A
na-
nometer is one billionth of
a
meter. Nanotechnology
was
first
used in
fabric in
1998 as
Nano-Tex. Fabrics are engi-
neered on
a
molecular
level
so
that
clothing
becomes
wrinkle resistant, stain
and
water resistant.
Nanote-
chnology cosmetics are
also
available. Nano-scale compo-
nents
are
incorporated
into
ordinary materials either dur-
ing
manufacture
or
post-
manufacture. The final
prod-
uct looks unchanged, but
a
special property
is
now
provided. Unfortunately,
un-
scrupulous
merchants would
market fake "nano" products
for
greater
profit. The
UK
Royal Society
and
Royal
Academy
of
Engineering
warned appropriately
that
"size does
matte/'-
nano-par-
ticles can behave quite differ-
ently from larger particles of
the
same material; there
is
evidence
that
nanoparticles
are more toxic than the same
chemicalin
its
largerform,
but
the
impact
on either
humans
or the
environment
is
still
unknown.
Take
care
