BITTER MELON:
RECENT
RESEARCH
ON
DISEASE
CONTROL
Bitter melon
(momor-
dica) is
bitter because
of
its
chemical compounds,
€.g.,
momordin.
As such,
the
me-
lon,
the
leaves,
the
root,
the
seeds and even the flower of
momordica have been known
for their medicinal properties.
Recently, extracts
of
momo-
rdica
have
been
found
to
sup-
press high blood glucose
lev-
els of diabetics despite
insu-
lin
resistance.
ln
China, tab-
lets
of extracted
momo-rdica
are already employed for dia-
betes management. Although
the thymus gland
is
important
for
body
immunig,
it
gradually
degenerates with
age;how-
ever,
momordica
extracts
have been shown to
stimulate
immunity in labo-ratory anim-
als.
Moreover,
momord-ica
contains
ribosomal-inactivat-
ing protein
(RlP)that
induces
apoptosis (programmed
cell
death) in HL-60 leukemia
cell
lines.
The seeds contain poly-
unsaturated
fatty acids
and
are
usefulfor
management of
high blood cholesterol,
let
alone other properties,
e.9.,
anti-oxidant,anti-bacterial
and
even
anti-HlV.
lnterestingly,
Momordica
also
has
anti-
sperm properties, even
the
size
of
the
testes is
reduced.
