The
past US President Reagan has recently died
in
June 2004
-
since November 1994,
he
was found
to be sutfering from dementia, a diagnosis that could have been made earlier. Most of
us
accept erroneously
that some degree
of
"forgetfulness" as being normal and most dementia patients are thus diagnosed beyond
the
manageable
stage.
Worldwide,
there are
17 million
dementia patients;
by
2050,
it
would
be
2O
million!
They tend to
be
forgetful and have personality changes
-
withdrawn, selfish, apathetic, shameless
and
even
unprincipled; they also have difficulty
in
naming familiar objects. Consult your doctor. Prevention
is
by regular
exercises [Nature Journal]; develop one's interests and social contacts; a balanced diet, including food rich

Ever since
Alzheimer
discovered
the
dis-
ease in
1906
and got
it
named after him, little progress had been made for almost a century.
Now,
cholinest-
erase inhibitors (ChE-l)
have been
found
to
restore
acetycholine
levels
in
the
brain
of
Alzheimer's
disease
patients
-
effective
in
the
treatment
of
the
cognitive, behavioral and functional deficits
of
related dementia.
Moreover, Prof
D
J Selkoe
of
the
Harvard Medical School
has
found out the apolipoprotein
E4
allele (ApoE4)
on
chromosome
19
to
be
the main
risk
factor for
late onset
Alzheimer's
disease, a
very
pertinent finding of
much future significance.
