MEMOIR
OFTRACE
ELEMENTS
As "trace
elements",
I
am
required in minute
quantities.
I
am
closely
related to coronaries
-
excessive
cadmium or
inadequate
selenium
leads
to high
blood
pressure. Bones
require not
only calcium and
phos-
phorus
but
also magnesium, manganese,
iron,
chromium,
nickel, copper,
zinc,
etc.
Zinc
is required for
growth,
immunity,
enzymes,
DNA proteins; it is important for
wound
healing
and
reproductive system development.
Deficiency
in
copper leads
to
anemia, poor bone
groMh,
nervous system disorder and poor immunity. lron
is
an essential component of hemoglobin of
red
cells and necessary for immunity;
it
also acts as
a
co-factor
for
many
enzymes. Manganese is involved
in many
metabolisms; essential for enzymes and
bone formation.
Magnesium is essential
for
muscular
function, heart
rhythm
and
bone growth;
it
also acts as co-factor
for
a
host of
enzymes. Selenium acts as
a
co-factor for some important enzymes;
it is
important for proper growth;
maintaining proper immune function; severe lack of selenium can
lead
to
heart
disease (keshan
disease)
and
Kashin-Beck
disease
(a
disease
of
the
bone);
selenium
is known
to
lower
the
risk of
developing
heart
diseases
and
cancers; it
is
also beneficial
in
aging owing
to
its
antioxidant properties. Apart from forming
bone,
the mineralcalcium
is
also required
for
nerve cell and muscle functioning and blood clotting. The best
way
of having enough trace
elements
is a
well-balanced diet.
