ON
"BIRD
FLU''
Not
so
long ago,
it
was felt
that
infectious
diseases
had
already
been controlled; instead,
diseases
like
diabetes and heart diseases would
threaten
human lives. Unfortunately, various new and
old
infectious
diseases
have now
made
a
resurgence. New
routes
of
infection
are discovered,
not
just
new
micro-organisms.
This
is
true especially
regarding
transmission of
micro-organisms
from
animalto
man. Difficulties
arise
be-
cause new strains are evolving
with
repeated transmission among different
hosts.
Apart from eradicating the
source
of
infection, we should also avoid disrupting nature's environment and
ecology.
ln ancient
China,
there were already early description
of
transmission
of
diseases from animals and
birds
to man.
For example,
in
the "Compendium
of
Emergency Formulary", description akin
to
rabies were found;
in
the "Three Farming
Dissertations", transmission of diseases among farm animals was described.
Again,
in
the "Compendium of
Emergency Formulary", there was
a
detail description
of
transmission through horses'sweat,
hair, breath
and dead
horses'bones.
Although Chinese traditional physicians have no experience on bird flu, the
author
believes that
their contribution cannot be
ignored. A few
ancient and more recent
herbal
formularies
have
been
cited
by
the
author to suit different kinds of bird flu
-
all these are only
for
readers' reference.
