HORMONAL
SYSTEM
Glands producing hormones
are
"ductless"
glands as they secrete directly
into
the blood.They
target specific receptors
in
the target organs
or
tissues and
provide
a delicate
balance on the
metabolism, controlling
the
internal environment
and
delicate balance,
regulate body growth and
development
and
initiate
nervous
defense against
stresses to
the
body.
There
is
also
a
remarkable
regulatory feed-back mechanism:
the
hypothala-
mus of
the brain secretes releasing hormones for
the pituitary gland;
in
turn,
it
would secrete stimu-
latory
hormones,
e.9., thyroid stimulating
hor-
mone (TSH) directed toward the thyroid
gland,
follicular
stimulating
hormone directed towards
the
ovaries,
corticotrophin
for
the
adrenals,
etc.
There
is
a
reciprocal relationship, e.9., less of
thyroid
hormone
induces more
TSH
and vice versa. Novel hormones
are regularly
being discovered.
The
parathyroids regu-
late
calcium
metabolism;
erythropoietin
of
the
kidneys
regulate
red
cell production;the
pineal
secretes
me-
latonin
that
regulates, amongst other things, our
sleep
pattern. Moreover,
the
biological and
synthetic
com-
pounds of hormones are
now
widely
available for
clinical
use. ln
turn, when these are being applied
clinically,
we would
obtain
new information by studying
their stimulatory
response and
their
deficiency.
Thus a better
understanding on
the
intricate hormonal
system
inside our body is now being elicited like never before.
