DOYOU STILL BRING
FLOWERS FOR
HOSPITALVISITS?
Recently, in
Shanghai, hospitals
have
prohibited flowers
in
the wards; many hospitals overseas
have
already done so for
a
long time, e.9., in UK, despite
the
love for
flowers, fresh flowers are listed as
a
"health
killer".
Even
the
National Health Service bans fresh flowers in hospitals. Pollens are antigens causing sensi-
tivity
reactions, may initiate or worsen other conditions. Certain fresh
flowers
require much oxygen
-
could
compete with the patient. At times, the water nourishing the flowers may
be
the breeding ground for bacteria
-
these
may eventually
end up
in
the air
of
the ward,
let
alone some unscrupulous traders reselling
used
flowers and spreading
infections
from patient to patient. Nevertheless, the beauty
and
color of flowers
do
contribute significantly
to
the overall recovery
of
the patient,
let
alone the soothing
effect for
stressed patients.
Present
research showed that
flowers can also
be employed for
specific therapies,
akin
to the
well-known
aromatherapy
that
employs various
specific
essential
oils
according
to various specific
conditions
and
requirements. ln
the
Chinese community, banning all flowers in hospitals appears
to
be far
too
rigid; for
patients who should avoid close contact with flowers,
a
gentle reminder is
apt;flower
shops
at
hospital
premises should also advise
on
the appropriate flowers for specific patients.
Moreover,
flowers and the water
nourishing
them should
be changed frequently.
