THE
PROS
AND
CONS
OF
"TRENDY''WASHES
To
some people, it
is
"trendy"to
wash, e.9.,
the
colon, vagina, and
the eyes.The
vagina is inhabited
by
lactobacilli
-
B0
million per
cc.
They decompose cells shed from the vagina into lactic acid so
as
to maintain
the acidity
of
the vagina,
preventing
the proliferation of other
bacteria.
Thus,
killing
the normal flora of
the
vagina with antiseptics would only
invite
the growth of other harmful bacteria
so
that vaginal infection sets
in.
The gut contains about
500
different
kinds
of bacteria.
Normally,
these flora are stable and similar
among
different
individuals.
The species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium form part
of
the main
physiological
mechanism of
the
body
-
forming
a screen against
disease
invasion and enhancing
absorption
of protein,
sugar and
fat;
as well as synthesis of vitamins, let alone their ability
to
counteract nitrosamines
that
may
cause
cancer.
The washing or killing of
these
normal flora would be inviting
other
infections
of
the
gut.
Even
the
eyes
contain
a
delicate balance
of
various co-existing bacteria
-
should
not be
disturbed unless
required.
Washing is done
with
saline, not antiseptics. During
vaginal
infections, washing
with
antiseptics is indicated
but not thereafter.
Therefore,
habitual
colonic washouts are not necessary for
healthy
people,
even as the
vagina and eyes are washed with water or saline,
though
not antiseptics that
would
kill
the
normal flora.
