A
number
of
plants may lower blood sugar levels. Pumpkin
is
special as
it
has-?bundaht
Pumpkin extracts
were
shown
to
reduce experimental alloxan-induced diabetes
by
stimulating pancreatic
secretions. Magnesium, chromium, zinc and cobalt contents of pumpkin contribute to this, e.9., lack
of
chro-
mium leads
to
reduced activity
of
insulin
-
a state akin
to
diabetes; zinc and cobalt are components of
insulin. Pumpkin extracts are also
effective
for
reducing high total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein
(LDL) levels
but
would increase high-density lipoproteins
(HDL);chromium
also prevents cholesterol depos-
its
on
blood vessels. Pumpkin
seed
extracts
are rich
in
vitamin
E
and beta-carotene and
have
strong
anti-
oxidant properties. As important biological response modifiers
(BRM),
they affect
many
cellular
biological
activities. Moreover,
through the promotion
of
superoxide dismutase
(SOD) actions,
there are
anti-oxidant
and
cancer prevention
properties.
The seed
may
also
have
pain killing properties and
may
also
numb the
tapeworm parasite. Pumpkin casserole preparations are recommended, especially for diabetics,
as
the con-
trol
of diabetes is thus facilitated. Pumpkin
is
high
in
calcium,
high in
zinc,
high in potassium but low
in
sodium and fat
-
suits diabetics
and
hypertensives.
