HIGH RISK
SUBJECTS
FOR HYPERTENSION
We
have
to
know well all
the
risk factors
of
hypertension, or high blood pressure.
Primary
prevention
is
for normal subjects whereas secondary prevention
is
to
control established hypertension. lt occurs
more
commonly
in men
and post-menopausal
women; it is
also common
not
only
in
the obese
but
also
in those
with
inappropriate distribution of body fat, e.g., mainly
in
the abdominal wall, resulting
in
a so-called "centrip-
etal
obesity"
-
a
reversed
waistline and hipline
ratio, not only
the blood pressure goes up
but
also closely
related
to
diabetes
and
high lipid levels. First
degree
relatives (brothers & sisters)
of
hypertensives are also
at higher risk
but
hypertension can still be prevented.:
avoid
obesity
-
the
more
the
overurreight,
the
higher
the
risk;
the faster
the
rate
of body weight increase, the higher the
risk
-
stay
from overeating
or
very
oily
food but
take
more
vegetables;
refrain from smoking and
drinking: although moderate
red
wine
may prevent
coronaries,
long-term
moderate
to
severe
drinking tends
to
raise
the
blood pressure; avoid excessive salt
intake;take
life easy and maintain sound
psy-
chological balance rather than being
ovenruorked
or
over-stressed; refrain
from
smoking
and
drinking;take
regular
physical exercises, say, half
hour a
day.
For
those
at
higher risk,
e.9.,
those
with family
history obese subjects, diabetics,
etc.,
check
the
blood
pressure
regularly.
