TEN QUESTIONS ON HYPERTENSION
Hypertension
or
high blood pressure, has risen from 6% during the early Liberation period
to
10% at
present. Hypertension
is
often silent during
its
early stages.
Later,
bizarre dizziness, headache, resflessness,
excessive
heart
beats or insomnia may signify hypertension. Untreated, memory deteriorates and attentive-
ness
lost
progressively;
others
may even have numbness of
fingers
or
toes
and signs
of
bleeding from the
arteries, e.9.,
of
the
nose, conjunctiva
or
the fundus
of
the eyeball, inside
the
brain, etc. lt
is
estimated that
in
those with severe nose bleeds,

would have hypertension. Obese subjects overload
their
heart
and
predispose
to
hypertension. Excessive
salt
intake leads
to
expansion
of
blood volume and tension also
increases. Excessive alcohol hardens the arteries and elasticity is
loat.
Prolonged mental stress
may
also
be
relevant
especially
in
those with genetic predisposition
to
hypertension. Hypertension
is
closely
related to
coronaries,
kidney
failure, hypertensive heart diseases and
stroke.
The WHO
has
defined hypertension to be
greater or equal
to
140
mm mercury systolic or greater or equal to 90 mm mercury
diastolic.
Treatment must
not
only be
initiated as
early
as
feasible
but
also
maintained
consistently
but
the
blood pressure
should
be
brought down
gradually.
The cause of secondary hypertension must not
be forgotten. Above
all, a
healthy
lifestyle
is
crucial.
