LIVING
MAN
BECOMES A
"STATUE":
DURING
AN
EPISODE
0F
HEART ATTACK
Uncle
Du,
62,
is
reported to freeze
himself
just
like
a
statue with heart
attacks
lrom "aortic
valve
incompetence". Our hearts pump
blood
for body circulation, assisted
by
valves allowing
only
"one-way traffic".
Valves
are
in
the
heart and at
the
root of
the
main
arterial trunk, the
aorta.
With an
incompetent aortic
vale,
Uncle Du had a compromised circulation, especially to
the heart
muscles (via
the
coronaries). During
heart
attacks, any
of
his physical activities
would
aggravate his symptoms of
chest
pain,
shortness of
breath and
pink
frothy
phlegm. He had
lo"freeze" himself
until
the situation
improved.
The
definitive
treatment
is
valve
replacement. ln China, there are 2.37 million patients with such "rheumatic heart valvular disease", of which
1O-2Oo/o
would likely
to
be serious enough
to
require valve replacement. ln
the
60s, metallic "ball and caged
valves"
were
tried
in
China for severe bicuspid valve incompetence
of
the
heart as
a
"cutting edge" operation
then;
the
bulky valve
with poor
hemodynamics soon gave way
in
the
70s
to
biological "tissue valves"
-
did
not require long-term blood thinning to prevent clot formation
but
could
last
for only 3-7 years;
in
the 80s,
3rd
generation "tilting disk" and "bi-leaflet" mechanical valves
could last
up to
25
years.
ln
1992,
4th
generation
ones
are
now not only silent
in
operation but also free
from
induction
of
blood clots,
so
that
long-term blood
thinning would no longer be required.
