THE
PROS
AND CONS
OF
OBESITY
ANDTHE
JOY OF
SLIMMING
Obesity,
usually
defined as 2Oh
overweight,
often arises
from
overeat-
ing but may also
be
due to hormonal or
metabolic derangements. Many people
are afraid
of
obesity
but
slim people are
found
to
have higher
mortality
rates.
ln
fact, body fat not only allows better
tolerance to the cold outside but
also
endurance
to
hunger. Nevertheless,
obesity increases the burden of organs
in
the
body
-
the diaphragm
is raised;
breathing
becomes
compromised
and
shortness of breath
is common.
They
also
have high blood
lipid
levels
and
high blood
pressure.
They commonly
have and hardening
of
arteries,
diabetes, coronaries and gall bladder
infections. On
the other
hand, wasting
is
defined
as
10% underweight
-
prob-
ably a
desirable state
for those
past
middle
age.
Nevertheless,
they
also
have
problems,
e.9.,
intolerance
to cold,
low immunity leading
to
more bronchi-
tis and more emphysema
-
a
chronic
obstructive aiMays
disease. Other
stud-
ies show
that underweight
women are
prone to diminished or absent menses
or
even infertility. Those
with
unex-
plained
and
progressive
weight
loss
may be
a
sign
ol chronic
consumptive
diseases,
e.9.,
tuberculosis, diabetes or
even cancer. Make sure
that appropri-
ate
medical
attention
is
sought,
other-
wise
it
may
be
too
late.
Above all,
as
both obesity and emaciation
have
their
pros and cons, do
the
appropriate.
