ACUPUNCTURE
FOR
TREATMENT
OF
STROKE:
KNOWLEDGE ON FEASIBILITY
&
UNDERLYING
MECHANISMS
Stroke
is
the
world's
No.
1
debili-
tating
disease and
3rd
commonest
cause
of death.70-80% of
stroke
patients are due to
infarct
or interrup-
tion
of
blood.
According to
the Yellow
Emperor's Canon
of lnternal
Medicine
of Ancient China, meridians and chan-
nels were linked to
the
nervous system
and
even
the naming
of
acupoints were
similar.
Recently,
acupoints are
found
to correspond
to
the segmental distri-
bution
of
the nervous
system;
the
incoming
message transmission
through
nerve-C
f
ibers are similar to
that
through the acupuncture channels
-
signifying close relationships; the
out-
going message transmission for
acu-
puncture action response
in
experimen-
tal
animals was mainly through
the
"sympathetic" nerves, with
possible
added
fluid
message transmission;
variation of response corresponding
to
the
magnitude
of the
acupuncture
stimulus signifies close relationship with
the central nervous system;
acupunc-
ture
effects also correspond to, but not
limited
to the
body's natural reflexes
arcs.To elucidate, studies on acupunc-
ture
specifically
for
strokes
were
undertaken: acupuncture is now also
employed
as acute
treatment
for
strokes, e.9., acupuncture by
Shi
Xuemin
with
"brain activating" and "con-
sciousness restoring" principles
were
effective during acute stroke; acupunc-
ture
may prevent "reperfusion injury"
after an
infarct
-
signitied
by
increased
neurone
mitochondria experimentally.
