FEAR NOT:APPROPRIATE
INTAKE
OF
SUGARS SHOULD
AFFECTYOUR
HEALTH
Although sugars confer an impor-
tant taste to
our
food, we do not
have
to
follow
Western countries to consume
sugars heavily; neither should we
be
afraid of sugars. ln fact, sugars consti-
tute
an essential component
of
our
nutrition; they provide an
inexpensive
energy
source for our physical and
men-
tal
activities.
With too
low a
blood sugar
level, we would faint;
too high
levels
require
extra
work by insulin (of
the
pancreas) to control high blood sugar
levels;
Excess
sugar
intake would
exhaust insulin and diabetes results.
Normally, surplus sugars are stored as
glycogen
in
the
liver, or
converted to fat
and being stored
in
the abdominal
wall.
However,
the sources of fat stores
in
the
body
also
come
from
other
carbohydrates,
e.9., rice,
noodles,
bread, cakes and potatoes,
etc.
Thus,
refrain only from taking sugars may not
reduce weight eflectively and there
is
no
direct relationship between sugars
and
cholesterol
or
triglyceride
levels
and
cardiovascular diseases. Entrepreneurs
pushing their sugar substitute in China
would deliberately
exaggerate the
harmful
effects
of sugars
but
we
have
to
look
at
the facts and
make
an indi-
vidual decision instead
of
taking their
point
blindly.
The annual sugar
con-
sumption for Mainland Chinese
ranks
7th
in
the world and is only 8
Kg.
per
year;
it
compares favorably with Ameri-
cans
-
70 Kg per
year.
Thus, there
is
no
reason why we should avoid
taking
sugars
like
in
the West.
