SELF.DIAGNOSIS
OF
COMMON
SYMPTOMS
Self-diagnosis ensures early con-
sultation for serious diseases.
Severe
hair loss
is
due to debilitating chronic
illness, hormonal disturbances, very
severe psychological trauma or
even
anti-cancer drugs, e.9.,
methotrexate.
Localized hair loss
is
due
to
infection
or
irradiation. Coughing
out
blood
is
due
to chronic
bronchitis, bronchiectasis
(chronic
infection
and dilatation
of
the
bronchi), tuberculosis, pneumonia, lung
cancer (common in middle to old age),
silicon lung diseases, heart failure and
bleeding disorders,
e.9.,
hemophilia,
etc.

all very
serious!
Although fresh
blood
from the anus
is
commonly
due
to
piles, the possibility of large
bowel
cancer
must be excluded; in kids, with
accompanying severe pain, the serious
acute "telescoping"
of
the
small
intestine
must be
excluded.
Backache
may be due
to
bone and
joint
degen-
erations
or
injury
-
pain
is
usually
worse
in the
morning;
soft
tissue
injuries usually cause more constant
pain;
when due to kidney diseases, the
pain is
more
to the side;
abdominal
organs, e.9., pancreas,
may
also cause
backache.
Shortness
of
breath
is
related to
the
respiratory
tract
or the
heart
or
due to metabolic disturbances,
e.9.,
acidosis. Cough
is
a
non-specific
reflex
from initation
of
the respiratory
tract. Fast heart beats may also signify
thyroid
disorders, anemia
and
nervousness.
For
nose bleeds
in kids,
try
pinching
the
nose; in adults, cancer
and other serious conditions must
be
excluded.
