THE STAPLE
DIET
OFTHE
21
CENTURY
-
GENETICALLY
ENGINEERED
FOOD
It
has been postulated
that
the
main staple
diet of the 21st
Century
would
be
genetically
engineered food.
Perhaps,
in
the
near
future,
we would
already be accustomed to such
food.
The idea was first conceived
in
the 80's
when
technically
it
was feasible to
insert certain desirable
genes into
our
food, e.9.,
pepper
and persimmon.
By
1997, USA could already produce
34
different
kinds
of
such food
and
had
tremendous impact
on
the
economy.
By
2010,
the total
income
from
such food
would
be
USD
20
billion and other
countries, e.9., Argentina,
Canada,
France
and
South
Africa
would
be
amongst
the supportive
countries.
Mainland China
has
also
done
similar
successtul experiments
on
rice,
soybeans,
tomato, etc.
Such
food
is
more perfect
in
their nutritional
value,
and
less oily;
during cultivation, they are
worm-resistant, virus-resistant and can
withstand
more severe climatic
conditions, reducing considerably the
cost
of
cultivation.
ln
fact, with
the
current
rate of
population
increase, by
mid-21st
Century we
have to increase
cultivation at least
3
times to cope with
the
demand. Of course, for certain
people with allergies, they
have
to
be
careful
regarding
which genes
have
been inserted
to
the
bod
and engineered
food should be tested
thoroughly.
However,
allergy is
rare
and
impact,
small.
All
in all, genetically engineered
food
is
a step in
the
right direction.
