First
recognized
in
1878, "bird"
or
avian influenza (Al)
virus
(highly
pathogenic sub-type) devastate chicken
flocks. The subtypes H5N1 and HrN,
may eventually spread
amongst
humans
(a
pandemic) when
Al,
mixes
with
human influenza viruses.
Pandemics
occur 3-4
times
in
a century,
killing millions
in
the world.
ln
Hong
Kong,
the
H5N1 Al was first
documented
to infect humans, killing 6 in
1997 but
prompt mass slaughtering
o{
all
chicken
effectively
prevented
a
pandemic.
Devastating Asian Countries, especially
Thailand, Vietnam and China, the Al
probably spreads by migrating
birds.
Children under
12
are prone;
in the
elderly and
infirm,
complications
prevail.
The incubation period
is up to
7
days;
some
have pneumonia
and
eflusion
(fluid inside
the chest),
progressing
to
acute respiratory distress syndrome,
kidney
failure, shock and
even death.
Diagnosis
is
by
clinical,
blood tests,
virus isolation
and
typing.
For
symptom-
atic treatment, avoid aspirin in children
(lor fear
of
Reye's
syndrome); very
prompt use of
"anti{lu"
agents, e.9.,
amantadine or rimantadine
may help;
but sides effects
are
confusion,
depresion, urine retention and
skin
rash,
etc.; alternatives are neuramini-
dase inhibitors, e.9., zanamivir
or
oseltamivir. Apart
lrom strict
hygiene
and regular, healthy lifestyles, consider
immune
stimulants,
e.9., "yunzhi" as a
supplement.
