GETTINGTO
KNOW
INFLUENZA AND AVIAN
INFLUENZA
The
avian or "bird"
influenza
is
now devastating more
than
10
Asian
Countries and
still
spreading
relentlessly.
"llu"
is
the short form
of
"influenza"; avian flu wipes out chicken
flocks
rapidly
and
may even
raid
mankind
-
flu epidemic.
Human
flu
is
by
an
orthomyxovirus (type
A),
e.9.,
H,N, or
H.N,
peaks
in Jan.
to
Mar.
H
(hemagglutinin, the surface
sugar
protein)
and N
(neuraminidase,
an
enzyme) denotes subtypes
of the
virus.
ln
1
970, the
gut of
the Ukaine
duck
was
found to be harboring avian
flu
virus, at
a
temperature
of 41oC.
With
mutation,
the current
avian
flu
virus
is
more
aggressive than
that in
Hong
Kong,
1997. To
achieve human-to-human
spread,
the avaian
virus
must
overcome
the immune system; survive well at
a
temperature of 33oC
to
34oC (of the
human respiratory
passages);
adhere
effectively
to
human
cells and
copy
itself
inside
these
cells. Avian flu
virus
uses
the
"H"
to
adhere
to
human cells
and the
"N"
to
digest the "sialic acid"
layer.
With
both receptors for
flu
and
avian
flu viruses in the
respiratory
passages,
the pig
is
a
convenient
"mixing vessel", permitting the combi-
nation of flu and avian flu viruses
-
the
prerequisite
for
human-to-human
transmission. Apart
from
strict hygiene
and regular, healthy lifestyles, consider
immune stimulants, e.9.,
interleron,
yunzhi
or
other traditional
Chinese
herbs, etc. as supplements.
