More and more cases
of
bird
flu
outbreak
are
reported
in
Aisa. Ten
countries
had already reported
cases of infection. Even the
World
Health Organization
(WHO) specialists were
surprised
by
the fast transmis-
sion
rate and
described this time's
bird
flu outbreak
as
most severe epidemic that has never been experienced
in
past.
ln
order
to
let readers have a better understanding
on
avian flu, the editor has specifically visited
Dr.
F.C.
Leung
and
Dr.
Jennifer Wan
at
the
University
of
Hong
Kong
and
invited
them to share with us their views
on
the following ten questions.
The natural
hosts
of
influenza
A
viruses
are
avian
species
panicularly
aquatic
birds
(waterfowl).
Emus
and
Geese
are susceptible
to
the
virus
whereas
Ducks
and
Pigeons are
more resistant.
Since the
late
1970's,
live
poultry
markets have been
known
to
be a source
of
influenza
viruses.
More recently
the
I{.N,
bird-influenza
virus
transmitted
to
and
killed
6
of
18
human beings
in
Hong
Kong.
No direct
evidence on
winter migrating birds
but
of
course
is possible
if
they carry the
virus HrN,
from
one
town
to
another and
from North to
South
at
a short
distance.
Many
possible routes,
i.e.
human
carries
infected chicken
from
one place
to
another,
i.e. farmers,
wet market
workers
travels
from
one place to another.
