the virus. As a sub-type

influenza
A virus,
HSN1
is
a
HPAI
infecting Hong Kong chicken flock and
killing 6 people in 1997
-
the first docu-
mentation
of
human
spread.
Now,
another
HPAI
is
devastating
many
Asian
countries.
Fowl
excreta,
secretions,
cages,
trucks
may contain the virus.
Despite
the
low human intection, the
chance
of
mixing avian with
human
influenza
viruses and
enabling spread
amongst humans
is
highest during
avian epidemics. Children under
12
are
prone; incubation period is
1
week; half
presents
as
pneumonia
or
even
respiratory distress syndrome,
turning
into
multi-organ
failure.
Clue
to
diagnosis: exposure
to
epidemic
countries; close contact with
fowls or
an
infected person. Contirmation:
by
isolation of the virus and blood tests.
Take
a good
rest
or be admitted;
note
complications;
fluid
replacement, fever
control but avoid aspirin in
children
(Reye's
syndrome
may occur);
consider
use
of
Amantadine.
Strict
personal
hygiene; destruction
of
inlected lowls
and disinfecting
of
environment
are
mandatory. Unfortunately, the human
vaccine against the H5N1
is
still
not
yet
ready.
