THE'BIRD
FLU"
RAID:
TAKE
EXTRA CARE
AS
HUMAN
H5N1
VACCINE
IS
NOTYET
READY
The "Bird"
or
avian
flu
has
now
spread
through
many neighboring
Asian
Countries and 20 million chickens have
been massacred. The concern
is
economical
and
medical: potential
human-to-human transmission
to
millions.
"H"
and "N"
designate
subtypes. Waterfowls, e.9.,
ducks
normally harbor them but territorial
fowls,
e.g.
chickens perish.
ln
Hong
Kong,
6 people died with
H5N1 infec-
tion in
1997;
in
1999,
2
people were
infected
with
HnN,
-
demonstrated
the
feasibility
of
transmission from bird to
humans where reassortment
with
human
llu
viral genes
may
occur
and
infection
amongst humans enabled.The
flu viruses mutate
readily,
developing a
new
strain almost
every year, at
times
caused catastrophic pandemics:
in
1918, by H,N,;
in
1957, by HrN.
and
in
1968,
by
H.Nr.
Elderly
people
and
young children are more susceptible.
After the massacre
ol
1.6
M
chickens
in Hong
Kong
in
1997, no people got
infected until Feb.2003.
Cunently,
the
avian flu is making a colossal combat
but
the human H5N1 vaccine
is
still not
yet
ready.
Greatest
care is
pivotal.
Destroy
all potentially
infected fowls
promptly; retailers
to
wear
masks,
gloves
and boots; excreta contaminates: avoid
all contacts with
birds;
wash
hands;
exercise regularly; rest
adequately;
refrain
from smoking;cook
all
fowls and
eggs well;
separate
raw and cooked
lood.
