INTERVIEW WITH
THE
WORLD
FATHER OF
SEVERED LIMB RE.GRAFTING
ln
early 1963, China had pioneered
the first case of re-grafting
of severed
limb
-
a
severed
right
hand
had
regained
function alter grafting
by the
then 33 year-old Orthopedic
Surgeon
Dr
Chen Zhongwei
at
the Shanghai
No.
6
People's Hospital.
Now,
40 years
has
passed,
the scientilic
research as well
as clinical
application
of
the
technique
of severed limb re-grafting
is
still at the
world's cutting
edge. Academician
Chen Zhongwei had, all along, devoted
his utmost and
talent
-
ever since he
first
succeeded
in regrafting the severed
right hand
when
he was
a
young
doctor.
Throughout the years,
Academician
Chen and
his
dear colleagues had also
succeeded
in
the world's lirsts:
island
flap
grafting, graiting
of
muscles
and
more re-grafting of severed
limbs.
With
their surgical skill, hundreds of accident
victims benefited. ln May
1981
,
he
was
elected to be a Member of
the
Division
of Biological Sciences
of
the
Chinese
Academy
ol
Science. Even up
to
now,
he is
still
amongst
the
few clinicians
serving as a Member of
the
Division of
the
prestigious Chinese Academy of
Science.
Prof
Chen
has
published
seven
high quality books, e.9.,
"Re-
grafting of
Severed Limbs"; another one
entitled, "Micro-vascular
Surgery" was
written
in
English and published
by
Springer of
Germany.
This represented
the
first books written
by
Chinese medi-
cal
professional
being
published outside
China.
