COLDWEATHER
Cold weather can predispose the
onset
of heart
diseases
-
when exposed
to cold,
the
blood vessels contract, the
blood pressure rises, the heart beats
faster so that the burden to the heart
is
increased
considerably. To
the heart,
the contraction
of
the coronaries would
deprive the heart
of
the normal
blood
supply and the heart
that
has marginal
lunction
would break
down.
ln general,
sudden change
in
the
air
temperature
is associated with a 2-3 times higher
incidence of
heart
diseases;
even
the
incidence of angina
would
rise up to 4
times the normal. Avoid going suddenly
from
a
warm
room
into
the cold outside
the house
but
go outside through
a
cor-
ridor or passage way so as
to
"cush-
ion" the sudden temperature change;
wear
a mask, scarf
and enough clothes;
keep
the
limbs
warm; avoid going out
on
a
lull
stomach as a
lot
of blood have
already
been diverted to
the
gut for di-
gestion purposes
and
the
heart
would
get less blood; bring along your angina
medicine,
just
in
case. Above all, any
aggravation of symptoms
from
heart
diseases during
cold
weather
must be
attended to
without
any delay.
