TRENDS
OF
3 MAJOR
SCIENCE ANDTECHNOLOGY
DEVELOPMENTS
IN
THE
21ST
CENTURY
Biotechnology,
electronics
and
nanotechnology are
3
major kinds
of
science and technology developments
in the
21st
Century. Gene
therapy
is
currently directed
at
hereditary
diseases, e.9., enzyme deficiency.
Tar-
geted cells
are
removed
lrom
the
patient's
body
for
introduction of the
desired gene
into
the cells,
and
finally
placing
the
modified cells back
into
the
patient's
body.
Genetic engineering pro-
cedures can alter the genetic compo-
nents
to
produce better
breed
creatures.
"Purging"
of
human sperms
with
undesirable genes
is
possible
through injection
of
manipulated
sperms to
mice
for multiplication before
fertilizing
the
mother's
ova.
ln
China,
medicinal
human
albumin,
insulin,
growth hormone and interferon are en-
gineered through cow's milk.
ln
Taiwan,
human Factor
lX
(for
coagulation)
is
also produced similarly through pig's
milk. Genetically engineered food items
are
now commoner. Connecting
be-
tween a computer and a human
brain
raised
the
lQ
to 600 - communicating
in
108 different languages simulta-
neously
or
work
on
a
complicated math-
ematical problem in
a
few seconds
is
feasible.
Various electronic artificial
organs, e.9.,
eye,
nose, tongue,
ear,
brain pace maker, etc., are
also tried.
Robots perform predetermined ultra-
fine actions, e.9., slicing skin 1/3
mm
thin.
Ultimately, nanotechnology
is
technology's
leader
-
working at
the
molecular level and creating structures
afresh from there (1 nanometre =
1
mil-
lionth of
a
mm).
