A NEWWEAPON AGAINST
CANCER:THE
CRYOCARE
SYSTEM
OF ARGON.HELIUIVI
CRYCIAFLATION
Cryoablation
is
ablation or burn-
ing
by intense
cold; it
is a treatment
option for
small
tumors that
are
situated
away
from
blood vessels,
the
bile duct
system
or the
gall
bladder. The Argon-
gas-based CRYOcare System devel-
oped by Endocare, lrvine, California,
is
a treatment via an open approach.
A
small probe, e.9., a 3-mm cryoprobe
is
placed directly into each tumour.
One
method
is
lo employ a
1S-minute
freeze
that preceded an active thaw
(helium
gas)
lor
each lesion. An ice ball forms,
the dimensions of which would usually
require careful monitoring
to avoid
dam-
aging nearby normal architecture, e.9.,
by an "intra-operative ultrasonogram"
-
an ultrasound examination being done
during the operation. The cryoprobes
can achieve
a
temperature
of -135 de-
grees C. Bleeding
is
uncommon.
His-
tological section of specimens
subse-
quently operated upon would show
that
there
is
a coagulative tissue necrosis
(acute death of all tissues nearby the
probe
due
to
coagulation rendered
by
the
intense
cold).
ln
general,
cryoablation
is
effective in destroying
these small tumors situated away
lrom
blood vessels or other normal architec-
ture
of organs as
the destruction
is so
powerful that ample training and expe-
rience
are
required to avoid damaging
any
of
the nearby
normal
tissues
or
structures.
