THE
2OO2
CHINESE
ONCOLOGY SCIENTIFIC
CONFERENCE, HANGZHOU,
On
Sept
24,2002,
the
Confer-
ence opened with 3,000 delegates from
across
the
Taiwan Strait and overseas.
Main topics were: molecular oncology,
cell
biology, onco-pathology, nuclear
medicine, pharmacology,
nursing,
tra-
ditional medicine and clinical oncology;
special
topics
by
professionals
across
the
Taiwan Strait were: early diagnosis,
human gene sequencing and the
on-
cology development
and
anti-cancer
drugs.
"70"/"
of
cancers
are
preventable", said the
Chairman.
The
National Cancer
lnstitute
of America
presented cancer
management
standards; in China, the cancer cure
rate of district hospitals is still signifi-
cantly lower than tertiary hospitals and
there is much
room
for
improvement.
Other Conference characteristics were:
systematic specialist commentary at
each session; encouragement of novel
technology, attempts and discussion on
controversies. Of note was the increas-
ing cancer incidence (especially
lung
cancer in urban areas); in recent years,
percentage of cancer deaths rose sub-
stantially

12.61o

deaths. Xu Guang-wei, Academician
of
the Chinese Academy of Sciences, be-
lieved
that
China is still lagging behind
Western countries on oncology man-
agement
concepts
-
"we
should
pay
more attention to cancer prevention".
ln
the
conference, breast
cancer
screening was appropriately dealt with
in
addition to hi-tech topics,
e.9.,
can-
cer and genes which also
got
the
ap-
propriate coverage.
