A newly-wed couple was appar-
ently living
happily but
the
husband,
Peter,
soon became sick
- he had
some
leg pain with a burning
sensation,
walked unsteadily and soon,
even
the
hands
were
numb and was
often
sweating, with the face
turned
reddish.
After
admission
to
hospital,
he
recovered, only to fall sick again soon,
with much worse symptoms and died
after a few
days
in
hospital. He was
eventually suspected
to
be dying
from
poisoning.
The Forensic
Pathologist
Thomas and the Police lnspector came
for investigations. After
autopsy,
Tho-
mas found
the
cause
of
death
was
poisoning
from
Thallium, a
rare heavy
metal that could be inhaled,
ingested
or
absorbed through
the skin.
Later,
Thallium was actually
lound
present
in
the vacuum flask containing
iced
tea for
Peter
who would
bring the
vacuum
llask
to
his
office each working
day. However,
it
was
uncertain
who
had put
the
Thal-
lium into
his
flask.
Finally Thomas
decided to inspect Peter's hair
to
deter-
mine
for
how
long
Peter
had
been
poisoned. Human
hair
is
a kind
of
stable
"store"
for
ingested elements.
lt
was
found
that
Peter had
been
poisoned
since
2
months after the wedding. As
Thallium was also lound in another
vacuum flask at home, Peter's
wife
was
cross-examined.
Finally, she
admitted
that the marriage was
a
failure and she
even decided to murder her husband
to get
the insurance
indemnity.
