DEVELOPMENT
OF
RESEARCH ON LONGEVITY
AND AGEING OFTHE CELL
Through successful
infection
control, the
average life
span
has dra-
matically increased from
30
years
in
the
18th Century to
the
present 65 in most
developed countries. However, current
problems like cancer,
coronaries,
stroke,
and AIDS remain .
With
longevity,
managing the elderly
in
the
society becomes
more important.
The
World Health Organization estimated
that 629 million
or
1/10
of the world's
population are aged 60 or above. With
the current trend,
by
the year
2150,
about
1/3 ot the
world population would
be above 60 years. On the other hand,
if
we cannot control AIDS, the average
life
span
may well
decrease by
10
years
-
this
is
like going backwards to the
"dark
ages". Free radical scavenging
in
the
body helps
to
reduce
the
rate
of
cell
ageing and such applications begins
to
be applied to diseases like Parkinson's
disease and pre-senile
dementia.
The
University of Hong Kong
has
developed
an
anti-ageing product
that
contains
super-oxide dismutase
and
10
other
herbs
like
ling-zhi, yun-zhi,
black
fungus, cordyceps, dan-shen, etc. to
counteract the problem
of
free radicals.
Other
natural anti-oxidants are vitamin
C
&
E,
beta-carotene, and
some
minerals,
as well as
glutathione,
lycopene, indoles, quercetin and co-
enzyme Q-10,
etc.
-
these
are
contained
in
common items
like
dark
green
vegetables, red or yellow vegetables
and fruits, vegetable oil, fish, etc.
