Scientists
observing small
mam-
mals licking their wounded legs to pro-
mote
healing
have
found
a growth fac-
tor in their saliva. Mouse
epidermal
groMh
factor (EGF) was discovered
in
1962 by Cohen.
EGF accelerated
eyelid opening in newborn
mice.
Cohen
and others had since won
the
Nobel
Prize
in
Physiology
and
Medicine
in
1986. The
human version (hEGF) had
a
70% similarity
with
the mouse version
(mEGF).
Although
minute quantities
of
hEGF
can
be
found in human urine,
it
was
too
scanty
tor
extraction
and
genetic engineering methods are
now
employed
to produce
EGF
for
medici-
nal
use,
e.9.,
in
the form of
eye
drops
to
promote
healing
of
corneal
ulcers and
abrasions.
A
"bonus"
application
is
for
skin
cosmetology
-
the
lactor could help
to generate tender, young-looking skin.
Another
very
novel
application
is for
slimming
-
experimentally, mice injected
with EGF had only half
of
the fat
con-
tent
in
the tummy;
even
the whole-body
fat was
only 20%
of
that
of
the
control
group of
mice.
Cunently, in Hong
Kong,
research
is
on-going - hEGF
is
tested
for promotion
ol
healing of the diabetic
leg ulcers (otherwise these legs
may
have
to
be
amputated!).The
FDA
in US
has
also permitted the
use of
a
plate-
let-derived growth
factor
(PDGF) for
such diabetic leg ulcers.
