DOYOU
KNOW
ABOUT
INTERVENTIONAL
RADIOLOGY?
lnterventional Radiology
is
a new
branch
of
Radiology.
Through
the
recent advances
in
imaging technology,
it
has
become commonplace to put
in
certain
catheters inside narrow body
lumens
and
to
make use
of
high reso-
lution
radiological
techniques to
local-
ize
precisely
the
position
ol
the
catheters.
This
is
like
extending the
arms
of
the doctor attempting to treat
the
patient. The
technique
is attractive
because
it
is a
so-called minimally
invasive technique, as
no
open wounds
on the skin are required.
lt
has
been
hailed as the most promising
medical
specialty of the 21st Century. One ma-
jor indication
is
to open
up
obstructed
lumens, e.9., bile-ducts compressed
by
cancers
-
usually
a
rigid
tube
is
put
in
to
maintain the
lumen.
When a ureter
(the
tube
linking
the
kidney
with
the
bladder) is blocked,
the
kidney goes
to
sleep and
may even decide
to
"pack
up";
in
that case,
a
"double-J" tube can
be put
in
to overcome the obstruction
and,
hopefully,
the
kidney
functions
again.
Another indication
is to deliber-
ately block arteries supplying certain
undesirable lesions, e.9.,
tumours
in
appropriate lobes of
the
liver.
Even
bleeding spots
not
manageable
by
other
methods
are
applicable.
Thus,
interventional
radiology not
only
helps
to overcome certain seemingly insur-
mountable tasks
but
also
broaden
the
prospects
of
human life sciences.
