PRESENTATION
AND
THERAPY OF
DEPRESSION
Suicide of mothers who
have
just
delivered their babies are reported
at
times.
These are due
to
hormonal
imbalance.
As
much
as
13-20%
of
people experience depression their
lives.
The World Health Organization
estimates that there are 100
million
sut
ferers of depression on earth and
as
many
as
15o/o
ol
them
may commit
suicide. Signs
of
depression
are
demor-
alized
looks, inappropriate sadness,
worry, withdrawn,
early-morning
awakening, inappropriate low mood,
and energy
levels
or an unusual lack of
interest
on the
surrounding
and
happenings. Precipitating factors
are
adverse social and
psychological
conditions,
in
fact, any powerful mental
pressure,
trauma or emotional turmoil
may cause
depression. lt
was
thought
that inappropriate
brain
catechoamine
levels,
especially with deficient
norad-
renaline
levels was linked to
depression.
More
recently, deranged
S-hydrox-
ytryptamine body secretion
was
incriminated.
As
endocrine
dysfunctions, e.9., thyroid
gland
insufticiency, Addison's
disease
(deficient adrenal gland
hormones),
Sheehan's syndrome (pituitary gland
necrosis
after giving birth)
may be as-
sociated
with
depression,
the
relation-
ship with hormones seems close. Mod-
ern
hi-tech scanning technology
has
also demonstrated some structural
changes
in
depression.Treatment
is
not
only
by medication but
also
by other
psychological support, adjustment and
counseling.
Fortunately,
with
appropri-
ate treatment,
the
results are usually
good and suicidal thoughts
can
thus
be
prevented.
