OBVIATE
"KIDNEY
DEFICIENCY'' TO
PREVENT
A
MULTITUDE
OF DISEASES
According to traditional Chinese
medicine (TCM) principles, the "kidney"
is not
just the narrow sense
for
the ana-
tomical organ that excretes urine
but
also
a
much wider scope of physiologi-
cal activity
so
that "kidney deficiency"
may lead
to
failure of other
organs,
e.9.,
the heart, the
liver,
the spleen or
the
lungs. Unfortunately,
the
kidneys
have
great compensatory power
so
that
clinical manifestations
of
frank kidney
failure means inability
to
salvage the
kidney function. Look
out for
any
urinary abnormalities, e.9.,
unusual
frequency, especially at night,
loin
pain,
persistent backache associated with
easy
tiredness or
swelling
of
legs, etc.
Deficiency
ol
the kidney "yang" leads
to
either too
much
or too little
urine
resulting in swelling of legs. Deficiency
of the
kidney
"yin"
leads to
fever,
excessive sweating,
dizziness,
ringing
in
the ears, dryness or pain
in
throat,
etc.
lt
pays to obviate any factors lead-
ing
to
kidney deficiency, as
a
multitude
of
diseases can thus be
prevented.
Avoid sudden shock
or
horrors
as
far
as feasible
-
according
to
TCM
principles,
these
may lead
to
kidney
deficiency. Take
sex
in moderation. Take
note of
warning signs,
e.9., excessive
urination
at
bed
time,
abnormal
amounts
of
urine
passed,
unusual
swellings, backache, tinnitus
of
the
ears, cough and phlegm, impotence,
infertility
and
lack
of physical or mental
development,
etc.
Above all,
have
regu-
lar
physical check ups
to
detect any
asymptomatic
kidney
dysf
unction.
