THE APPROPRIATE DIET
FOR
CHEMOTHERAPY
PATIENTS
Chemotherapy usually refers to
the administration of antFcancer medi-
cations (olten by
inlra-venous
injections)
in
order
to
kill cancer cells
that
have been
found in the
body.
However, as chemotherapy agents
would kill all dividing cells
in
the body
(regardless
of
whether they are cancer-
ous or not),
many
types of
normal
tis-
sues
are
affected, e.9.,
the
bone
marrow,
the
hair
follicles, the
stomach
and
the intestines, etc., are also al-
fected adversely.
All
affected tissues
have
to
repair
themselves
as
soon
as
possible but they
would
require "raw
materials", i.e., proteins as
new build-
ing
blocks.When the bone marrow cells
are knocked down by chemotherapy,
the
circulating
white
blood
cells
(responsible
for
body defense),
the
platelets (responsible for
blood
clotting)
and even
the
red cells would decrease
rapidly.

such protein deficiency
is
not
replenished
immediately, even
the
im-
munity would be lowered,
as
the anti-
bodies are also
made
from
protein.
Apart
lrom
immunity, tissue and wound
healing also depend
very
much on
the
supply of
proteins.
Thus, chemotherapy
patients should take a well
mixed
diet
consisting of adequate calories
and
good nutrition, especially proteins, e.9.,
chicken, ducks fish, prawns, lean meat,
eggs, etc. Above all, a well-balanced
diet with
fresh
fruits
&
vegetables
and
supplemented by sufficient
fluids
is
mandatory.
