EVIDENCE.BASED
MEDICINE
.
THE
DIRECTIVE
FOR
THERAPEUTICS
INTERVENTIONS INTHE
21ST
CENTURY
"Evidence-based medicine"
has
to do with
the
principle of obtaining un-
biased
clinical
evidence
for
any
new
healthcare interventions before
it is
ac-
cepted
as
one
of
the standard tools
in
medicine.
This
is
definitely necessary
because
the
natural
tendency
is
for
re-
search workers in the field
to
over-
emphasise the effectiveness and
to
deliberately
ignore
the short-comings of
any new healthcare intervention. The
Cochrane Collaboration, formed
in
1993, has
Centres in
13
countries,
in-
cluding
China.
The Cochrane Library
publishes issues that
contain
many
re-
views on new healthcare interventions.
These
reviews aim
to
be less biased
than
even standard medical journals
because
the
Cochrane Collaboration
has made
it a
point to improve editorial
processes and
the quality
of
the
reviews.
Specitic guidelines and check-
lists
have
also been developed
for
easy
implementation
and
reference.
Thus,
the Cochrane Collaboration
has
tried
very hard
in
this specific direction
in
order
to
lead the way in setting
even
higher standards for preparing system-
atic
reviews. Even so,
all
scientific
reviews, including
the
Cochrane ones,
should be
read
critically as errors
can
still occur and potential biases
impos-
sible
to
rule out entirely.
For
any
new
healthcare
intervention,
one
has
to
re-
main highly sceptical until there is
in-
disputable clinical evidence
that
the rec-
ommended intervention is
really
worth-
while
in terms of cost-etfectiveness.
