MEDICAL LABORATORY
TECHNOLOGISTS
CONTRIBUTE
TO
DIAGNOSIS
BY GOING OUT
OFTHEIRWAY
A
25-day old
baby
with
a
common
condition of
neonatal
jaundice (yellow
of
the newborn) presenting with
fever
and
pallor but
did
not improve
with
antibiotics; the medical laboratory tech-
nologist
(MLT)
who
did
the repeat blood
cell count, found accidentally
a
malaria
parasite on
the
blood
smear for
microscopy. He
went out of
his way
to
report this and the
correct diagnosis and
appropriate treatment was finally
delivered. Another youth from a farm
had fever
for
1
week
and was
diagnosed
as
typhoid
but, on
taking
blood for
the
confirmatory tests, his blood was found
to
be
thicker than usual and
clotted
much faster. As
this
may
suggest epi-
demic haemorrhagic
lever,
the finding
was discussed
with the
doctor
in
charge. Finally, the correct diagnosis
of
haemorrhagic fever
was
reached
-
it
was very fortunate
of
the
patient. An-
other patient with hepatitis was
not
sus-
pected until the blood serum
was
found
to
have a yellowish tinge.
Lastly,
a 4-
year old
kid
was initially diagnosed
as
tuberculosis meningitis
at
a small dis-
trict
hospital but did not improve with
anti-tuberculosis treatment. The correct
diagnosis
of
fungal
meningitis
was
not
reached
till
the
MLT
found fungal spores
in
the
spinal fluid. Teamwork
does
it!
